A Presence Since the Beginning

There was nothing unexpected about my encounter with Hermes. Looking back, it feels as though he has been present throughout my entire life, appearing in different forms long before I knew his name. Through dreams, symbols, synchronicities and moments that seemed to exist beyond ordinary explanation, I often sensed an unseen thread running beneath the surface of experience.

Some of these moments were deeply mystical. They felt strangely familiar, not like learning something new but like stumbling across a truth that was waiting to be activated. Over time, I began to notice the same themes returning again and again, guiding my attention toward mystery, meaning and the hidden connections that link the inner and outer worlds.

I cannot point to a single moment and say, “Here is where it began.” Instead, I became aware of a presence moving through many of the subjects that fascinated me. Astrology, mythology, symbolism, philosophy and the mysteries of human experience all seemed to contain traces of the same underlying current. At first I noticed fragments. A phrase encountered in a book. A symbol that appeared repeatedly. A principle that seemed to explain far more than it should. Gradually these fragments began to form a pattern. The name attached to that pattern was Hermes.

The Messenger Between Worlds

Hermes Trismegistus occupies a curious place in history. Part sage, part myth and part mystery, he stands at the crossroads of worlds. Greek and Egyptian traditions converge within his image, creating a figure who seems to belong as much to the realm of symbol as to the realm of history.

Yet what captivated me was never the question of whether Hermes was a man, a title or a legendary synthesis of many sources. What captivated me was the wisdom attributed to his name. Definitely a living archetype.

The Hermetic teachings seemed to speak a language that felt familiar. They described a living universe woven together through correspondence, relationship and meaning. They suggested that what unfolds within us and what unfolds around us participate in the same greater pattern. They invited a way of seeing that united rather than divided.

As I explored these ideas, I felt less as though I was learning something new and more as though I was remembering something ancient.

The Alchemist’s Secret

Like many people, my earliest image of alchemy involved lead, gold and secret laboratories hidden from the world. Yet the deeper I ventured into Hermetic thought, the more I realised that the true laboratory was the human being.

Alchemy revealed itself as a language of transformation.

The lead was fear, confusion, limitation and fragmentation. The gold was wisdom, integration, clarity and understanding. The furnace was experience itself. Every challenge, every loss, every period of uncertainty became part of a process through which something raw could be refined.

This understanding changed the way I viewed life. Events ceased to appear random. Difficult periods acquired meaning. Transformation became something more than change. It became a sacred process through which consciousness encounters itself and emerges altered by the encounter.

The Emerald Thread

Among all Hermetic teachings, one idea continued to echo through my thoughts more than any other.

‘As above, so below. As within, so without.’

At first glance, it appears deceptively simple. Yet the longer I have reflected upon it, the more profound it has become. I see it in astrology, in mythology, in the patterns that unfold through human lives. The visible reflects the invisible. The outer mirrors the inner. The individual participates within something larger while simultaneously containing its reflection… and the other way around.

This principle became an invisible thread connecting many of the subjects I loved. It revealed relationships where I once saw separation. It encouraged me to look beneath appearances and seek the deeper structures that give rise to experience.

A Living Presence

Today, when I encounter the name Hermes Trismegistus, I think less of a historical figure and more of a living current of wisdom. A current that has travelled through centuries, cultures and traditions, continually finding new ways to express itself.

That current has influenced my work, my studies and my understanding of the world. It has shaped the questions I ask and the way I approach the mysteries that continue to inspire me.

The whisper of Hermes seemed to arise from somewhere beyond thought itself, calling me inward towards hidden depths, revealing unseen threads of connection where others see division and inviting me into the timeless mystery of transformation.

Perhaps that is why the Hermetic path continues to call to me. For beneath every symbol, every chart, every myth and every experience, I sense the presence of an enduring mystery quietly waiting to be explored.
